DJ Certified ????? out of 5 Moneybags

When it comes to DJs who have stayed true to the streets, DJ Epps (Yves J Felix) stands out as one of the most authentic voices in the game. I?ve been rocking with DJ Epps for a long time?back to the open mics of the '90s and early 2000s. He?s always had his ear to the streets and worked with indie artists long before it was cool. While other DJs may have shifted their focus to chase the next big paycheck, Epps has always been about the culture, creating opportunities for local artists to get their music heard by live audiences and build their network.

His consistency, hustle, and genuine passion for hip-hop have made him a staple in the South Florida scene and beyond. Now, Epps is killing it as the flagship DJ on Rock The Bells XM Radio, owned by none other than LL Cool J, the Hip-Hop legend of legends, who?s been instrumental in holding hip-hop together through all its highs and lows. Epps? authenticity and deep connection to the community make him the perfect DJ to represent on such an iconic platform.

????????????Interview: DJ Epps Talks Music, Miami, and Show Us Your Flex

Early Influences

Nate: What were your biggest musical influences growing up, and how did they shape your interest in DJing?

DJ Epps: Growing up, I was influenced by DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Jam Master Jay. They showed me how powerful a DJ could be, not just controlling the crowd but creating moments that people remember for a lifetime. I wanted to be that kind of DJ, someone who could move the crowd and leave a lasting impact.

Miami's Hip-Hop Scene

Nate: You?ve been a part of Miami's hip-hop scene for years. Can you describe what the scene was like when you first started, and what made it unique?

DJ Epps: Miami had a rawness to it. When I started "Miami Nights", it was all about representing the streets, and there was a hunger from local artists to make their mark. Miami has always had a unique blend of sounds, with influences from the Caribbean and Latin cultures, so our scene had a different flavor from the East and West coasts. We weren?t trying to copy anyone; we were building something new.

The Saturday Night Ride

?????????????????

Nate: Rock The Bells Radio is legendary. Tell me about 'The Saturday Night Ride.' What kind of vibe do you aim to create with that show?

DJ Epps: The Saturday Night Ride is all about giving listeners that high-energy, feel-good vibe. I want them to feel like they?re at the hottest party, whether they're in the car, at home, or out with friends. It?s a mix of classic and current sounds?something that takes you back but keeps you hyped in the present.

Global Sounds

Nate: You?ve got a diverse range of music on your show, from hip-hop to reggaeton and Haitian influences. What draws you to incorporate these global sounds?

DJ Epps: Music is universal, man. It doesn?t matter where it comes from, if it?s hot, it?s hot. I love blending different sounds because it brings people together. I?m Haitian, so my culture is always going to come through in the music I play. I want my listeners to experience the world through sound.

Impact on the Hip-Hop Community

Nate: You?ve always been about supporting the community. How do you see yourself contributing to hip-hop through your work?

DJ Epps: It?s all about giving back, especially to the indie artists. I?ve always believed in breaking new music and giving artists a platform. I see it as my responsibility to help the next generation, just like the OGs helped me when I was coming up.

Advice for Aspiring DJs

Nate: For those trying to break into the game, what advice would you give?

DJ Epps: Stay true to yourself and your sound. Don?t follow trends just because they?re hot at the moment. If you love what you do and work hard, the rest will come. Build your network and be consistent. Also, don?t be afraid to take risks. You can?t grow by playing it safe.

The Future of Hip-Hop

Nate: Where do you think hip-hop is heading in the next few years?

DJ Epps: Hip-hop is always evolving, man. We?re seeing more global influences and more diversity in sounds. I think the future is about collaboration and pushing boundaries. But no matter where it goes, it?ll always be rooted in the culture, the storytelling, and the energy of the streets.

Show Us Your Flex: The Collab with Ramp Lo

Nate: So tell me about Show Us Your Flex. How did this collab with Ramp Lo come about?

DJ Epps: Ramp Lo and I go way back, so when we decided to work on a track together, it was all about creating something that felt like a celebration of life. We wanted to bring that high-energy, feel-good vibe to the track, something people could really vibe to. The process was all about having fun and making sure we had a track that would get people moving. The response has been amazing.

Advice for the Youth

Nate: Lastly, what advice would you give to young people trying to find their way in the music industry?

DJ Epps: Keep grinding, stay focused, and surround yourself with the right people. Your mindset is everything. Stay positive, stay hungry, and never stop learning. The music industry is tough, but if you?re passionate and determined, you can make it.
